LiliCastle Stahleck is a 12thC castle turned youth hostel in the town of Bacharach on the Rhein river in Germany. It was built in 1135 and has been a youth hostel since 1925. I stayed here for a night in winter and was lucky enough to have a room to myself overlooking the Rhein - best time to go to avoid the tourist rush. The castle is surrounded by vineyards and beautiful gardens atop a large hill. So the climb to the top is steep but well worth the adventure.
Erik SchmidtOooohhh. Sounds good.
Did they let you wander various parts of the castle?
I stayed in one in Toledo, but it may as well have been a new building from what you could see from the inside.

Erik

LiliUnfortunately I didn't get to wander that much inside - got there late and left early. The parts that I saw inside were modernised for youth hostel purposes. The outside seemed quite original but then again it was so dark, hard to tell. You were allowed to wander anywhere around the outside of the castle, including up the tower which was unfortunately only open during certain times though - during the daytime I think. Perhaps other people on COTW have visited Stahleck - I'd be interested to know!

PS Where is Toledo? How old was the castle?

ellie123im going there in june with my school...i herd the rooms were "skabby" and not very nice have you got any fotes?
